Sherry kindly agreed to answer some questions about her beading career.
How/When did you start beading?
1997 I began beading while my mother was hospitalized after a car accident. I bought a few tubes of beads and taught myself some stitches while I sat at her bedside trying to get her out of a coma. She is fine today and I found a new career!!
Where do you usually bead and how many hours a day do you usually spend beading? Is it your hobby, or your job?
I have a large kitchen/studio that I work in and it is a full time job. I rise at 4a.m. and do my household work, take the kids to school and then I begin beadwork projects.
How much time did you spend making one of those amazing embroidered neck pieces?
I can't possibly keep track of the hours!! I always say a lifetime, because there is a whole lifetime of learning and love in each design.
Do you think a lot before doing a beadwork piece, or you just start beading and see what happens? It just happens...I never plan.
Do you have a strong aversion to any colors? Colors that are hard for you to design with? A strong preference?
I can't stand working with RED. I'm very drawn to earth tones.
Your beadworks sparkle like precious stones. What beads do you usually use in your beadworks?
I love Swarovski crystals. I like to combine natural stones with crystals.
What are your favorite beadwork links?
I don't have much time to view anything online!
Who is your favorite beadwork artist?
There are too many fabulous artists out there to pinpoint one. I can say that when I began beading I was very inspired by Virginia Blakelock and Carole Perrenoud. Also NanC Meinhardt's creations are amazing. Heidi Kummli who co-authored my book with me is one of my beading hero's as well!!
Which beading book is your personal favorite and why? The New Beadwork for it's inspiration. It was one of the first books I purchased and I still refer to it for reference.
I see Steven Tyler is a fan of your beadwork, isn't he? Could you tell us more about that beaded belt he owns?
Steven is an awesome person and yes he wears my beadwork on his jeans and does own two belts. The belts took a year to execute and are completely beaded with mother of pearl "fangs" hanging from the leather. I've also done artwork for Aerosmith's backstage passes.
What are your other hobbies?
Hanging out with my two beautiful daughters!! I also love working with paper mache and illustrating. I have a graphic design degree so occasionally I go back to my roots and play around with 2-D art.
